Every spring the first Saltie is greatly awaited by the people of Duluth. There is even a contest to see who can guess which day the first will arrive. Cargo ships, called salties, make their way to Duluth to load up with coal, iron ore, wheat and other bulk commodities. From Duluth the ships will make their way through the St. Lawrence seaway onto the Atlantic Ocean to take cargo all over the world.
